In a tucked-away corner of East Campus hidden behind the College of Law lies a small plot of land where students gather each week to connect, learn, and grow food for their peers. It is called the Student Organic Farm.
The SOF has been around since 2013, and has grown into an organization focused on reducing food insecurity in the UNL community while providing knowledge on the virtues of small-scale organic farming. Every year, we grow our food to national organic standards using no synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilizers and instead utilizing intercropping methods and local compost we make on-site or from Big Red Worms.
This summer we are starting our first ever Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)! Our CSA will supply our customers with fresh organic produce every week for 21 weeks throughout the summer. By purchasing a share, people are directly supporting the farm and UNL students throughout the growing season.
Members will be allowed to pick up their share each week on UNL’s East Campus during the specified day and time that they choose—either Tuesdays from 4:30pm–7:00pm or Saturdays from 9:00–noon. They will get to build their baskets from seasonal produce freshly picked that morning. Early on there will be lots of fresh greens and other springtime veggies (think: kale, salad, garlic scapes, spinach, Swiss chard, etc.) followed by early summer fruits (includes: cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, basil, green beans, etc.) and outdoor plantings of other exciting veggies (think: eggplant, tomatillos, summer squash, hot peppers, watermelon, dill, etc.)
For those wanting more, we will have extra produce for sale when people come to pick up each week that members of the community can purchase as well. We will also have an optional Autumn box available in October.
